FISH BIOLOGY LABORATORY

Our laboratory provides efficient, reliable, and high-quality services to support project-specific biological sampling requirements. Our skilled and experienced technicians provide these services to industry and government for a range of research initiatives.

STS'AILES CHUM MARK RECAPTURE AND VISUAL STREAM ENUMERATION

JO Thomas has provided 25 years of continuous scientific support and analysis to the Sts'ailes and DFO for their Harrison River Chum mark-recapture and visual stream enumeration programs. The purpose of this study is to provide a robust technically and scientifically sound tagging and recovery program that estimates the annual chum spawning population in the Harrison and Chehalis Rivers, one of the largest and most important chum populations of the lower Fraser River.

CREEL SURVEY DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

A leader in creel survey design and implementation for over 40 years, JO Thomas provides in-depth analysis of marine and freshwater recreational fisheries at both local and regional levels. These analysis are used to guide in-season management as well as inform policy and planning activities.

SELECTIVE FISHING RESEARCH

With growing interest in selective fishing practices  since the early 1990s, JO Thomas has worked with government, industry, First Nations and recreational groups on a broad range of research projects aimed at developing practical, efficient methods to selectively harvest target salmon species without harm to incidental catch and release of vulnerable non-target species.
